Genovia’s Royal Court Assembles Again
Anne Hathaway’s 2024 Instagram post dropped the confirmation fans had been waiting for since development began in 2022. “Miracles happen. Back to Genovia with [director] Adele Lim. The fairy tale continues,” she wrote, officially announcing her return as Mia Thermopolis for The Princess Diaries 3.
The announcement sent waves through a generation raised on makeover montages and royal etiquette lessons.
Director Adele Lim steps into the franchise after Garry Marshall’s passing, inheriting a property that has maintained its cultural grip through constant TikTok recreations and comfort-movie marathons. The original film transformed awkward teenager archetypes into empowerment narratives, creating quotable moments that still circulate across social media platforms.

Andrews’ Royal Dilemma
Julie Andrews’ participation remains the franchise’s biggest question mark. Her stance has shifted dramatically over recent years, creating uncertainty around Queen Clarisse Renaldi’s future. In 2020, she expressed enthusiasm during a Talk show appearance, stating she would be “up for” returning and would “love to work with Anne again.”
Two years later, Andrews reversed course entirely. “I think it would be too late to do it now,” she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022. “There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. It’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.”
Her comments don’t constitute a definitive no, but they signal significant reluctance. The actress, now in her late 80s, may be considering the physical demands of returning to a major franchise role after such an extended hiatus.

Male Leads Lock In Returns
Author Meg Cabot revealed during a BookCon panel that both romantic interests from the franchise will return. Robert Schwartzman, who played Michael Moscovitz in the original film, appears in the new script alongside Chris Pine’s Nicholas Devereaux from the 2004 sequel.
“There’s a part for everybody, because there’s a thing that happens where everyone has to show up,” Cabot explained. “Robert Schwartzman’s in it. Chris Pine obviously is in it.”
Pine’s return addresses a significant fan concern, given his character’s central role in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. His presence suggests the third installment will acknowledge the sequel’s romantic resolution rather than ignoring it entirely. Schwartzman’s inclusion brings the franchise full circle, reconnecting Mia with her original love interest from the first film’s high school setting.
The casting decisions indicate a story structure that requires multiple characters to converge, though specifics about the plot mechanism remain undisclosed.

Cabot’s comment about “everyone has to show up” hints at a reunion-style narrative, but whether that means a royal crisis, a celebration, or something else entirely stays locked in Disney’s vault.
