This summer, bikini tops started showing up at bars, restaurants, and rooftop parties – worn straight from the beach and never changed out of. That was the warm-up act. New York Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2027 collections have now made the next move explicit: the bra itself – padded, strappy, lace-trimmed, or otherwise – is a top. Not a layer underneath something. A top.
Over 15 NYFW runways featured bras in some form during the SS27 shows, from statement bralettes worn with nothing over them to padded balconette styles peeking deliberately out of unbuttoned shirts. Designers including Sandy Liang, Khaite, Ella Mae, 7 For All Mankind, Aknvas, Altuzarra, Grace Ling, and Vettese all put lingerie at the center of their looks – not as an afterthought, but as the point.
What the Designers Actually Did
The approaches varied, but the intention didn’t. Aknvas and 7 For All Mankind sent colorful triangle bralettes down the runway layered under lace dresses and loose silhouettes, with skinny scarves adding a kind of studied nonchalance. Altuzarra, Grace Ling, and Vettese went a different direction – balconette bras and bandeaus tucked under outerwear, visible enough to register but anchored by structure above.
Ella Mae’s take was the most playful: pink bras with fallen straps, worn both under and over tops simultaneously, as though the styling process had been intentionally interrupted and left that way. It’s a mood more than a formula – disheveled on purpose, which is its own kind of precision. Sandy Liang and Khaite, both known for mixing femininity with an edge, leaned into the flirty register of lingerie without softening the rest of their collections around it. The bra wasn’t a concession to trend. It was doing real work in the look.
What ties all of these together isn’t a single silhouette – it’s the visibility. Every one of these designers made a deliberate choice to let the bra be seen, whether that meant wearing it alone, letting straps slide off a shoulder, or sizing up a button-down just enough that the balconette underneath couldn’t be missed. The SS27 collections didn’t whisper this. They announced it.
The Off-Runway Signal
Fashion weeks don’t operate in isolation, and this one is arriving alongside a clear pop-culture echo. Off Campus, the current series starring Ella Bright as Hannah, has made bra styling a recurring visual in the show – push-up bras worn as tops, thick straps left deliberately visible under shirts. It’s the kind of costume design that isn’t accidental, and it’s reaching an audience that isn’t waiting for a magazine to tell them what to wear next season.
When runway collections and screen costuming arrive at the same reference point around the same time, that’s usually when a trend stops being a trend and starts being the baseline.
How to Actually Wear It
For anyone not ready to walk into a dinner reservation in just a bralette, layering is where this trend has the most range. A lace bralette under a low-neck blouse or an oversized blazer keeps the look intentional without requiring much boldness. A padded bra under sheer mesh or a crochet top gives the underlayer visibility without full exposure. Colorful bra straps slipping out from under a tank top is, at this point, practically the entry-level version – low risk, high recognition.
The silhouette, padding level, fabric, and color all become variables you control. A structured balconette in a neutral reads differently than a bright triangle bralette worn with a loosely tied scarf – both appeared on NYFW runways, both work, and neither requires the other’s logic. The trend is wide enough that the styling choices are genuinely personal rather than prescriptive.
Wearing a bra as the top itself – the bolder end of this – appeared across multiple SS27 shows, not just from the brands known for pushing boundaries. That’s significant. When more conservative commercial labels start styling a look the same way as the avant-garde ones, the look tends to move fast into the broader market. 7 For All Mankind presenting triangle bralettes the same season that Grace Ling is doing balconette-under-outerwear is exactly that kind of signal.
What’s harder to map is where the saturation point lands. The bikini-top-as-going-out-top moment from this summer hasn’t fully peaked yet – it’s still gaining ground in the way that trends do when they move from early adopters to everyone else. The bra trend is now being loaded into that same pipeline, with 15-plus runways and a prestige TV costume department already behind it. The question isn’t whether it happens. It’s whether your version involves a fallen strap on a Thursday night or a structured balconette at a Saturday dinner, and who decides.
