A trio of gourmet wine events at The Devonshire Arms Hotel

AdminAdmin—October 29, 2025

Befitting of this Yorkshire hotel’s award-winning wine list and sommelier service, The Devonshire Arms Hotel will be presenting a trio of wine events at its 3AA Rosette ‘Burlington’ restaurant this coming season.

Each is hosted by John Atkinson, Master of Wines since 1999, whose passion for wines and academic prowess for the subject has led him to work on both sides of the channel as both distributor and producer. During his career, John has worked alongside some of the industry’s most influential characters including Paul Draper, Charles Rousseau, Alvaro Espinosa and Francois Billecart, and he has been awarded the Bollinger Tasting Medal for ‘blind tasting excellence’.

The three gourmet wine events held at The Devonshire Arms, will each take guests on a sensory deep dive into a particular wine region or country, commencing on Thursday, 4th May with the best of Burgundy, where five notable wines will be presented by John, along with a five-course tasting menu curated by the Head Chef to complement the selection.

The dinners promise to be both informative and convivial, an opportunity to share and discover with fellow oenophiles, and learn more about the region’s master producers, terroir and varieties. Each wine will be thoughtfully chosen to pair with delightful seasonal dishes on the tasting menu, creating a satisfying and possibly thought-provoking evening for those who love dining out, and who are especially passionate about superb wines.

The Côte D’Or region, characterised by limestone scree and low vineyard walls has the feeling of a lost, fallen civilisation and yet this area of Burgundy is utopian for discerning wine drinkers. This first event in May will see the nowadays rare and highly coveted, Sylvan Cathiard and Marquis d’Angerville joining the line up, and not to be outdone by its red counterparts, Javillier’s Meursault 2014, should arguably be able to hold its own, and is bound to incite some lively debate among enthusiasts.

This exclusive series of events is available to a limited number of diners to ensure a high level of personal interaction. Following on from the Burgundy event, there are two more events to enjoy during the autumn season.

On Thursday, 5th October, the Bordeaux wine dinner will present the opportunity to sample Mitjavile’s Roc de Cambes against the Tertre Rôteboeuf. The latter is from a grander appellation, but the former often catches up in quality with extra bottle age. Château Leoville Poyferré, John believes, is arguably the most refined wine from the St Julien AC which should make for an interesting contrast with Château Clerc Milon – the event will certainly liven the palate and breadth of knowledge of the enthusiast.

The event on Thursday 23rd October, explores the Spanish offering to old world production techniques. In a sphere of notable wines, the country’s artisan mastery for oak and ageing methods is markedly revealed in what may be indeed one of the world’s finest wines, Vega Sicila’s Unico, alongside other incredible labels such as Flor de Pingus, 2010 and Sangenis Priorat, 2006, carefully paired with a delectable seasonal tasting menu.

Each event can be enjoyed as an evening event, or as a residential package to fully relax and make the most of the Devonshire group’s distinct style of hospitality. Dinner with wines, is priced at £250 per person (7pm for 7.30pm start) and with overnight accommodation is priced at £375 per person. Book the overnight event package which includes traditional Yorkshire breakfast online here.
